Description:
A "Theory of the Japanese" offering many lessons even to Japanese people themselves. Facing an unknown nation called Japan where Western behavioral norms and ways of thinking do not apply at all, America found itself compelled to understand Japanese behavior, character, and their unique modes of thought. The Japanese people, who love beauty and devote themselves to the art of chrysanthemum cultivation while simultaneously revering the sword and bestowing the highest honors upon samurai—a contradiction from the perspective of Western cultural traditions—are the subject of Ruth Benedict's research conducted during wartime when fieldwork in Japan was impossible. This work has long been read and reread as a "Theory of the Japanese" that imparts many lessons to us Japanese as well. With large typeface and annotations for difficult vocabulary, this is a volume that Japanese readers can truly master!
