What Was the First Japanese Book You Successfully Finished?

Hi there! 👋

Welcome back to KITAKAMI JAPAN BOOKS DIRECT 📚🇯🇵

For many Japanese learners, finishing an entire book in Japanese feels like a major milestone.

But that raises an important question:

What should your first Japanese book be?

Should it be a graded reader?

A manga?

A children's book?

Or perhaps a novel?

Recently, we at KITAKAMI JAPAN BOOKS DIRECT gathered stories from Japanese learners and explored a simple question:

"What was the first Japanese book you successfully finished?"

The answers were fascinating.

Some learners began with graded readers. Others started with manga or full-length novels. Some chose stories they already knew from movies or anime, while others simply picked a book about a topic they loved.

One thing quickly became clear:

There is no single path to becoming a Japanese reader.

Here are some of the experiences we discovered.

📖 Starting with Graded Readers and Manga

For many learners, graded readers and manga provided the perfect entry point.

One learner started with a Level 1 graded reader before reaching JLPT N5. Later, around N4, they read their first manga, Yotsuba&! (よつばと!) by Kiyohiko Azuma (あずまきよひこ) and eventually moved on to Mata, Onaji Yume o Miteita (また、同じ夢を見ていた) by Yoru Sumino (住野よる).

Another learner also chose Yotsuba&! as their first completed Japanese book.

What made it easier?

The pictures.

Even when they didn't understand every word, the illustrations helped them understand what was happening.

You don't need to understand everything to enjoy the story.

That is one of the greatest strengths of manga.

『ちいかわ なんか小さくてかわいいやつ 1』

Like Yotsuba&!, Chiikawa relies heavily on visual storytelling.

The illustrations provide valuable context, making it easier to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words and expressions.

If your goal is simply to experience the satisfaction of finishing your first Japanese book, a short and visually engaging manga can be a wonderful place to begin.

📚 Not Everyone Started with an Easy Book

Interestingly, not everyone chose something designed for beginners.

One learner began with Demonbane (デモンベイン) at around the N3 level and described it as quite challenging.

Another reader chose 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami (村上春樹) as their very first Japanese novel.

It took a long time to finish, but by the time they reached the final page, their Japanese ability had improved tremendously.

Others mentioned novels such as:

  • Fukkatsu no Hi(復活の日)
  • Kino no Tabi(キノの旅)

These stories remind us that there is no magical JLPT level at which reading suddenly becomes easy.

Sometimes a difficult book is the right choice if it gives you enough motivation to keep going.

If reading 1Q84 sounds exciting but perhaps a little intimidating, consider starting with one of Haruki Murakami's shorter works.

Hear the Wind Sing was Murakami's debut novel and is considerably shorter than many of his later books.

The most important thing is not always choosing the easiest book.

It's choosing a book you genuinely want to finish.

❤️ Sometimes Your Interests Matter More Than Difficulty

Several learners chose their first books simply because the subject interested them.

One reader selected Subete no Jinrui o Hakai Suru. Sorera wa Saisei Dekinai because they were already passionate about Magic: The Gathering.

Another learner picked CLAMP's Wish after discovering it at the Kyoto International Manga Museum and ended up reading it in a single sitting.

They later described the experience as a turning point in their Japanese-reading journey.

These stories highlight an important lesson:

The easiest book isn't necessarily the easiest book for you.

If you already love the characters, world, or topic, you'll often be much more willing to look up new vocabulary and keep reading.

Already a ONE PIECE fan?

Then reading the series in Japanese can be a powerful source of motivation.

When you're excited to find out what happens next, studying vocabulary becomes part of the adventure.

Sometimes your passion for a story can become your most effective learning tool.

🎬 A Familiar Story Can Make Reading Easier

Another common strategy was choosing a story learners already knew.

One learner started with a Japanese novelization of Frozen at around N5-N4.

Although it took more than a year to finish, they eventually reached the end.

Later, they read the Japanese novelization of Encanto and completed it much more quickly.

They particularly enjoyed discovering scenes that never appeared in the movie.

This approach makes a lot of sense.

When you already know the plot, you can focus more attention on the language itself.

Another learner mentioned reading Keigo Higashino's (東野圭吾) Galileo series after watching the television drama adaptation.

Knowing the story beforehand gives you a roadmap while reading.

If you've already seen your name., you already know the main characters, setting, and plot.

That familiarity allows you to focus more on the Japanese while enjoying a story you already love.

You may even discover details that weren't included in the film.

📚 From Manga to Full-Length Novels

For some learners, the real milestone came when they moved beyond manga and graded readers.

One learner described Convenience Store Woman (コンビニ人間) as the first non-manga Japanese book they successfully finished.

Others mentioned books such as:

  • Boku no Ojisan(ぼくのおじさん)
  • Uzumaki Neko no Mitsukekata(うずまき猫のみつけかた)
  • Kitchen(キッチン)

One reader noted that although Kitchen is frequently recommended as a beginner-friendly novel, they personally found If Cats Disappeared from the World more enjoyable.

That's another good reminder:

A book's reputation as "easy" doesn't automatically mean it's the right book for you.

🌸 There Is No Single "Right" First Japanese Book

Looking through the experiences we gathered at KITAKAMI JAPAN BOOKS DIRECT, one thing stands out:

The variety is remarkable.

Some learners started with graded readers.

Some chose manga such as Yotsuba&!, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Wish, or Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun.

Others jumped directly into novels like Convenience Store Woman, Mata, Onaji Yume o Miteita, or even 1Q84.

Some picked books because they already knew the story.

Others selected them because they loved the subject matter.

And the time needed to finish those books varied enormously.

For one person, a manga took only an afternoon.

For another, a novel took more than a year.

There is no universal "correct" first book.

Your first book can be easy.

Your first book can be difficult.

It can be a manga, a novel, or a story you already know.

What matters most is finding a book that gives you a reason to keep turning the pages.

Finishing your first Japanese book isn't simply a test of your Japanese ability.

It's the first step toward becoming someone who reads in Japanese.

So here's a question for you:

📚 What was your first Japanese book?

Or, if you haven't read one yet,

📖 What do you want your first Japanese book to be?
